Navigating the Multiple Layers of Diversity & Inclusion: Leading and Planning by Example
To align with MPI’s Global Initiative of diversity and inclusion, the MPI WestField Chapter will take a look at the many layers of diversity and inclusion beyond “appearance”. Please join us in welcoming Ms. Helen Diane Foster, Executive Director, Office of Recruitment & Diversity at CUNY, former Commissioner, New York State Division of Human Rights, as she reveals the obvious and not so obvious areas to be considered when developing an event and/or workplace that is diverse and inclusive. Ms. Foster is a dynamic, energetic force, so bring your questions for this interactive session.

Learner Objectives – After this session, you will learn:

  • How to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Go beyond the reflection in the mirror – it’s more than outward appearances.
  • How to create a diverse and inclusive meeting. Consider program location & dates, attendee culture, topics & speakers, audience engagement & networking/social events, ADA needs, and of course - dietary restrictions.
  • Learn what legislation is in place and what is next to support a more inclusive society.

Helen Diane Foster, JD

In April of 2019, Helen Diane Foster accepted the position as Executive Director for the Office of Recruitment and Diversity at City University of New York. Ms. Foster has always been committed to inclusion, equity and diversity. Having been the outside, the only one or the first one, she understands the importance of creating an environment where differences are welcomed, appreciated and valued. In this new role, Ms. Foster will work closely with the new chancellor, Dr. Felix Matos Fernandez and the CUNY Board of Trustees to fully develop and expand the office at CUNY.

Prior to this position, Helen Diane Foster was appointed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo as Commissioner of the New York State Division of Human Rights in September of 2013. She was confirmed by the New York State Senate in June 2014. As Commissioner, Ms. Foster was responsible for the enforcement of New York State’s Human Rights Law, the oldest such law in the country. In this capacity, she was charged with developing, managing, and executing strategies to prosecute systematic forms of discrimination through investigations and complaints initiated by the Division or by individual complainants, and developing policies and legislation to advance the civil rights of all New Yorkers.
